Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire (2009)
Gabourey Sidibe is electrifying in this film adaptation of the novel Push, playing a teenage mother trying to find self-esteem in the midst of poverty and the cruel abuse of her mother. The late reveal of an HIV diagnosis only compounds her challenges, yet somehow this film offers the grace of hope through the kindness of her teacher and a sympathetic nurse. A painful, ultimately beautiful film.
