Admirers thread among 8,000 new AIDS Memorial Quilt blocks blanketing the Ellipse—just south of the White House—on its June 25 debut. The three-day display marked the first massive unfolding in Washington, DC, since 1996. Maintained by the Names Project, the quilt has embarked on a two-year, 50-city national tour to raise funds for its permanent return to the capital, in 2006.
