The stigmata of Kaposi’s sarcoma, a blood-vessel cancer, came to define the AIDS look in the ’80s, but it turns out that the lesion-causing herpes virus KSHV predated HIV. Researchers at UCSF recently checked frozen blood samples of gay men collected in 1978 (when there was almost no HIV in San Francisco) and found that one-quarter already had KSHV.
