The first federal prosecution for growing pot under California’s medical marijuana law ended July 12 with the conviction of Bryan Epis, 35, who faces a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence. His appeal will argue that his 1997 arrest predated federal rulings that what Cali allows is not OK with Uncle Sam. HIV negative but in chronic pain, Epis was barred from using a medical-necessity defense.
