Scientists call it the building blocks of life, but in a blood transfusion DNA can be the nails in the coffin. Cerus Corporation just debuted a new chemical to safeguard the blood supply from all viral (and other) invisibles -- even as-yet-unknown bugs. The compound binds to all DNA or RNA at large in the otherwise-gene-free blood, inactivating the freeloaders.
