Arthur Ashe

Three-time tennis grand slam winner Ashe revealed his status at a news conference after learning that USA Today was planning to disclose he had HIV. According to Ashe, he contracted the virus from a blood transfusion he received in 1983. He eventually founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. On February 6, 1993, the 49-year-old died of AIDS-related pneumonia.
