Rudolf Nureyev

The renowned Russian ballet dancer and choreographer died on January 6, 1993, of AIDS-related complications, at age 54. According to his doctor Michael Canesi, Nureyev had learned he was HIV positive in 1984 but did not disclose his status because he feared it would halt his career. Canesi suspected that Nuryev had contracted the virus four or five years prior to that.
