On the final day of AIDS 2024, Kaye Hayes, HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Infectious Disease and Director of the Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy, and Francisco Ruiz, Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, shared highlights and their takeaways from the conference with Caroline Talev, Executive Director of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Watch their conversation at the top of this blog post or on YouTube.

Kaye and Francisco said some of their favorite moments during the conference were in the Global Village and Exhibit Hall spending time with community partners, which exemplified the conference theme “Putting People First.” They plan to take back best practices and continue to ensure that public health has a whole-person approach with community members involved in conversations.

Earlier in the week, Kaye spoke with Jeanne Marrazzo, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH, about topics such as the PURPOSE 1 study of lenacapavir for twice-yearly PrEP and new evidence on cabotegravir administered every two months for PrEP, including its safety in pregnancy. She also talked with Dr. Troy Grennan, physician lead for the Provincial HIV/STI Program, British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and Clinical Associate Professor, University of British Columbia, about research findings he shared on the potential of doxycycline as pre-exposure prophylaxis for STIs, or Doxy PrEP.

On opening day, Kaye spoke with PEPFAR’s Ambassador John Nkengasong about the importance of the U.S. government’s attendance at the conference and PEPFAR’s activities and priorities. Kaye also had a conversation with Dr. Dázon Dixon Diallo, Founder and President of SisterLove, Inc., with a focus on the significant research findings impacting women today and in the future. Also this week, Kaye and Francisco spoke about dismantling inequities that contribute to the HIV epidemic.
