“NORMANDY, Missouri (AP) -- Students at a suburban St. Louis high school headed to the gymnasium for HIV testing this week after an infected person told health officials as many as 50 teenagers might have been exposed to the virus that causes AIDS.” - CNN reported on 10/24/08
The report also proceeds to explain how one of Normandy’s football team rivals was scare of playing them, and with good reason. The HIV ?scare? produced a make-shift testing facility in the school’s gym, to make matters worse the testing was VOLUNTIARY!!! Ignorance is NOT bliss. Other reaction from the ?scare? included students planning on transferring to neighboring high school (as though it that was going to help,) and a case of ?devastating? teenage heartbreak?weep weep. First of all, CNN shouldn’t have used the word ?scare? while reported the story. Kids have sex, I get it, HIV testing should be mandatory in high school. This isn’t anthrax were taking about, it could be prevented by education, tolerance, and chipping away the stigma.
Stigma is me, I’m gay, I was out in high school, and now I have AIDS, blah blah blah... This November is my 20th high school reunion in Schenectady, New York. Will I be attending?...no. I’m be celebrating Thanksgiving with my friends in Palm Springs. Watching the 1939 version of The Women is one of our favorite traditionals. Schenectady STILL is not ready for me. No longer working as a designer traveling all around the world, no longer muscular and viral, since I stopped using steroid because the toxicity to my liver, and my face, and body, I?m lost most of my fat from wasting. Vain much?! Isn?t that what high school is about? ?Does HIV look like me??...yes, indeed, it does! I remember when I was a senior in high school, on Halloween my ’69 VW beetle was trashed. The license plates jammed into the gutter, someone tried to pour sugar into my gas tank (thankfully, the VW bugs had locks on the caps,) and the most telling thing, ?fag? was scribed into the fender probably with a key or screwdriver. Do I want to see guys, after twenty odd years since the incident occurred, who vandalized my automotive pride and joy, a few of which were on the high school football team? Hell NO. Fortunately, I’m already dealt with the trauma, through years of therapy...lol
I don’t think I can directly help those kids. I’m too old, too gay, and I live in New York City. The students (football players, cheerleaders, et al,) their parents, their educator, and their health department better realized that noone is safe from HIV. It’s everybody’s problem now.
GO BLUE DEVILS!!! {my old high school team}
