A coalition of activists, including HIV/AIDS groups, marched May 12 on Wall Street to protest proposed cuts to the New York City budget, according to the Housing Works blog. The coalition represented the interests of education, transportation, seniors, labor and housing. About 10,000 city jobs, including 6,100 teaching positions, may be eliminated. The proposed budget would cut more than $5 million from supportive housing services at the HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) and would eliminate $1.3 million in rental assistance for HASA clients. The Momentum Project, which serves meals to homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, would be at risk for closure. The City Council must pass a final budget by June 30.
