The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has created a scientific expert panel to provide advice on major scientific discoveries, on the needs of AIDS researchers and on policy adjustments required to address such needs. The panel is chaired by professor Salim S. Abdool Karim, director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research (CAPRISA) in South Africa. The topic of its first meeting is on the implications of the “Mississippi baby” researchers claim has been functionally cured of HIV.
