The documentary How to Survive a Plague was nominated for Best Documentary Feature for the 2013 Academy Awards. First-time filmmaker and longtime AIDS journalist David France used archival footage and current interviews to recount the history of HIV treatment activism. Among the many activists from ACT UP and the Treatment Action Group (TAG) spotlighted in the film are AIDSmeds.com founder Peter Staley, TAG executive director Mark Harrington and Spencer Cox, who died recently. Also nominated for an Oscar was Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner, who wrote the adapted screenplay for Lincoln. The Oscars will be awarded on Sunday, February 24.
