Elton John Senate Hearing
Sir Elton John testifies about U.S.-sponsored global AIDS programs.
The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee—specifically, the subcommittee on State, Foreign Operation and Related Programs—heard testimony on May 6 regarding U.S. support of global health programs, particularly those programs like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) that combat the AIDS epidemic abroad, according to the Senate committee’s schedule.

The four leaders speaking at the hearing were Ambassador-at-Large Deborah L. Birx, MD, who is the coordinator of U.S. Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS and special representative for global health diplomacy with the U.S. State Department; Mark Dybul, MD, the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; Sir Elton John, the founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation; and Rick Warren, D.Min, the pastor of Saddleback Church.

Senator Lindsey Graham is the chairman of the Senate subcommittee.
