First, speak with your physician. Rule out medical reasons for the exhaustion.

If everything checks out medically there are several habits to evaluate:

* Are you trying to do too much? If the exhaustion is due to excessive activity, be selective. Participate in the activities that you value most and graciously decline the rest. Whether living with HIV or not, “burning the candle at both ends” can lead to exhaustion.

* Dehydration can also lead to exhaustion. While recommendations vary, increasing your water intake may help. Try drinking more water throughout the day. For easy calculation, place a rubber band around your glass each time you fill it or, if you drink bottled water, save the caps and count them at the end of the day.

* Meals and snacks should be consistent and well-spaced throughout the day. Infrequent or high calorie meals may contribute to fatigue.

* The addition of mild to moderate exercise usually increases energy levels. Start slow and be consistent. Be patient. It may take a few weeks to feel the benefit.
