What’s wrong with this headline: “‘HIV Virus’ Detected in Walmart Bananas After 10 Year Old Boy Contracts The Virus”? For starters, it’s 100 percent implausible. HIV cannot be spread by food because it doesn’t survive outside the human body. Yet this report—and several like it—have appeared across the internet, recently on a website designed to look like CNN. In rating this clickbait article on its Truth-o-Meter, Politifact called it “Pants on Fire,” but another topical phrase comes to our mind: fake news.
Pants on Fire!
Can you get HIV from eating bananas?
