The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will give 12 research teams a combined total of nearly $50 million over five years to study effective ways to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS among inmates, parolees and probationers, according to a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) statement. NIDA will provide most of the grants with support from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The teams will research the Los Angeles County Jail; the Cook County Jail in Chicago; the Rikers Island correctional facility in New York City; jail facilities in Washington, DC; and prisons in Illinois, North Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin and Rhode Island.
