Marvell Terry II of HRC in the ’End Bad HIV Laws’ campaign.
“In more than 30 states, people can be tried and imprisoned simply because a partner accuses them of hiding their HIV status. It often doesn’t matter if you used a condom or are on protective medications—or even if the accusation is false.” So states Marvell Terry II in a video campaign titled “End Bad HIV Laws” designed to raise awareness of this issue and to abolish such laws.
The campaign is a joint effort of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the Center for HIV Law & Policy.
In the nearly three-minute video, Terry outlines five things people need to know about HIV criminalization:
- HIV criminal law are rooted in ignorance rather than science.
- Effective HIV medications make it significantly easier to treat or prevent HIV.
- HIV criminalization laws don’t help end the spread of HIV.
- There are actual, effective ways to stop the spread of HIV.
- You can be a part of the solution.
A related fact sheet, which you can download here, provides more details on each of the five topics.
