For last summer’s Di-namite Christie’s auction, the Princess of Wales cleaned out her closets-79 ball gowns and cocktail dresses-and raised $3.25 million for AIDS and cancer charities. This off-the-shoulder, ink-blue velvet dinner dress worn at a Reagan White House gala in 1985, where Princess Diana danced with John Travolta, was bought anonymously for $222,500. The sale broke a previous Christie’s record of $145,000 for Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever threads. As POZ went to press, Diana was killed in a tragic car accident. See the December issue for a tribute to the People’s Princess.
