Dawnmarie, 36
Diagnosed 1989
What’s your story?
I got HIV from my first husband, a heroin addict. He was the first person I’d been with, and he didn’t know he was positive until his AIDS diagnosis. He died in 1993. My second husband died from an aneurysm. Luckily, my family’s very supportive.
What has HIV taught you about hope?
There’s something more out there. Despite losing two husbands, I’ve picked myself up. That gives me hope that everything will improve and I’ll have somebody to treasure again.
What do you hope for?
A cure. With more funding, it’ll happen.
