A bill to restore $250,000 in cuts from Dallas’s HIV/AIDS services budget was voted down 9–6 by the Dallas City Council, the Dallas Voice reports.

According to the article, the proposal was shot down because of concerns that the funding source—a collection of delinquent multi-tenant inspections fees—does not really exist.

Since City Manager Mary Suhm was elected by council members to find a more secure funding source, the city has also applied for two grants, totaling $500,000, to support HIV/AIDS education and prevention. “We’ll find something out next week,” said District 1 Councilwoman Delia Jasso. “But it is an ongoing thing in terms of how [Suhm] can reprogram some money.”

The council is scheduled to agree on the 2009–10 budget by September 23.
