In the video ‘Fly Away,’ Ron H. shares his story of depression, addiction and HIV.
Tuesday, May 19, marks the 10th annual National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2015. The Banyan Tree Project launched the event as a way to help end HIV stigma in the Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities.
According to a Banyan Tree Project press release, this year’s event will include the premiere of digital stories of people in the community living with or affected by HIV. The videos were made in workshops created by the Banyan Tree Project and the Center for Digital Storytelling.
Among AA and NHPI communities, HIV stigma is a main barrier to getting tested. In fact, according to the press release, this is the least likely racial group to get tested for the virus.
The Banyan Tree Project is a national social marketing campaign to fight HIV stigma. It is a project of the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center. To learn more about the project, visit http://banyantreeproject.org.
