Negative news about statins has our positive hearts pounding. In a letter to the editors of the August 1 Journal of AIDS, a group of top University of Miami Medical School docs warns that HIVers’ immune systems could be further compromised by certain cholesterol-lowering drugs—Lipitor and Pravastatin are two—widely prescribed to PWAs now that HIV meds (and living longer) have spiked heart risks. In a related development, statins appear to have no special anti-HIV effect, despite high hopes, according to a new study in the journal AIDS. Not to say HIVers should stop taking these highly effective drugs. But it’s back to the lab—and the gym.
