The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is preparing a lawsuit against the South Carolina prison system for segregating its HIV-positive inmates in separate dorms, The Associated Press (AP) reports. On June 22, Jon Ozmint, director of the South Carolina prison system, received a letter from the DOJ saying the state has 90 days to cease this practice or the federal government would file a lawsuit. The state agency adopted the segregation system in 1998, when corrections officials started screening all inmates for HIV.
