The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has awarded $42.6 million to expand substance abuse and behavioral health services among racial and ethnic minorities most affected by HIV/AIDS, according to a SAMHSA statement. The grants are part of SAMHSA’s Strategic Initiative on Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness, which is supported by the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 12 Cities Project. In collaboration with HIV/AIDS prevention and care services, primary care networks will be developed and expanded. Access to prevention and treatment services for substance abuse and mental health conditions will be improved in the 12 jurisdictions that bear the highest HIV/AIDS burden in the nation.
