Synthetic sea-snail venom eases pain for people with AIDS or cancer when morphine and other painkillers fail. The stuff—zinconotide—beat the placebo by 35 percent in a Johns Hopkins Med School study, though large doses caused side effects. The FDA is hot on the trail of the snail.
