In Thailand, officials once silent about rising infection rates are campaigning for a “fair share” of the UN’s AIDS fund. In September, AIDS officially became the country’s No. 1 cause of death. Said one leader to The Nation, "Most nonaccidental deaths [were reported as] ’the heart stopped beating.’ This led to a misconception that most Thais die of heart disease." An estimated one in 60 Thais is HIV positive.
