New Zealand has seen a significant drop in the number of new HIV cases among men who have sex with men (MSM), according to the New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) data reported by GayNZ.com. Statistics show that the number of new HIV cases among MSM in 2011 was about one-third lower than the same figure from 2010, which put the number of new cases at 100. NZAF attributed the drop to its amped-up campaign of HIV prevention and testing programs and its online outreach to the gay community. However, the organization cautioned that the drop could prove temporary, since more New Zealanders than ever are living with HIV as a result of effective treatment, and since many people are still testing late and already have AIDS when they are diagnosed.
