On June 29, the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt will be ceremonially turned over to Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum, as a taonga—a cultural treasure—Yahoo! News reports. The Quilt has largely been in storage for 10 years, as its size makes it difficult to display the Quilt in its entirety and because the funds to move and exhibit it have been lacking. The Quilt, started in 1988, details the lives of more than 140 New Zealanders who’ve died of AIDS-related illnesses. No new panels have been added since 2003, as access to antiretroviral drugs have greatly curtailed New Zealand’s AIDS mortality rate.
