Kenny Scharf, hot-shot surrealist artist, has created a monster. And with it, he’s vying to unpin the red ribbon as the emblem of the fight against AIDS. The 38-year-old Dr. Frankenstein found the longtime fashion statement boring--especially for kids--so he designed a spiky, red HIV-cell look-alike: The AIDS Monster. “It’s important to confront the monster and say, ’We can look at you ever day and still go on. And kill you,” Scharf said. The horror will bare its fangs on mugs and shirts this spring; the proceeds will go to PWA housing. Time for Susan Sarandon to ditch her Dolce & Gabbana.
