The court case concerning the future of Insite, a supervised-injection facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, has come before the Supreme Court of Canada, The Canadian Press (CP) reports. Supporters of Insite, including British Columbia’s provincial government, argue that the site’s activities reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis as well as overdose deaths, drug use and drug-related crime. The Canadian federal government has banned safe-injection sites, but the provincial government claims that Insite is a health care facility and as such falls under the jurisdiction of the provinces rather than the federal government.
