One year after the January 12, 2010, earthquake that crippled Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital struggles to help people with HIV/AIDS, the Westside Gazette reports. Advocates claim that the quake destroyed at least half the city’s AIDS clinics. Just one example: SEROvie, the country’s largest LGBT HIV group, saw its building flattened and most of its staff die. It has made little progress since then. New York City–based groups including Housing Works, Aid for AIDS, Caribbean Women’s Health Association and Diaspora Community Services have since helped fund two new AIDS clinics. UNAIDS and U.S. funding have helped, but much remains to be done.
