The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has made progress in improving LGBT health, according to an HHS statement. The department’s list of achievements includes: creating a National HIV/AIDS Strategy; adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the HHS nondiscrimination policy; affirming that all hospitals accepting Medicaid and Medicare must respect the rights of patients to choose their visitors, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity; and creating initiatives targeted at LGBT people in such areas as tobacco cessation, suicide prevention, foster care, homeless and runaway youth, and services for the elderly.
