More than half of Lithuania’s 11,000 prisoners refused meals for eight days in June to dramatize their demands for meds and vitamins for HIVers, better food and relief from overcrowding. An outbreak of 230 infections in Alytus penitentiary doubled the tiny nation’s positive population. Hunger-strikers sat down for some grub after officials promised to improve nutrition and open a center at Alytus to treat drug addiction and HIV.
