Monday, December 1, is World AIDS Day. Marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), the annual event began in 1988. It is a time to raise awareness of the disease and remember those lost to HIV and living with the virus.

Since 2012, the WHO theme for World AIDS Day has been “Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero deaths from AIDS-related illness. Zero discrimination.” This year, the WHO campaign also focuses on closing the gap in HIV prevention and treatment. Meanwhile, the U.S. federal campaign for World AIDS Day 2014 is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.”
