WHO Trans Brief

The WHO’s 34-page policy brief.

The World Health Organization released recommendations on HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment care and needs of transgender people. Titled Transgender People and HIV, the policy brief is the first WHO document to focus exclusively on the global transgender population.

In previous years, the WHO did not separate the HIV needs of trans people from the needs of men who have sex with men (MSM). In last year’s document Consolidated Guidelines on HIV Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment and Care for Key Populations, the WHO acknowledged that “high vulnerability and specific health needs of transgender people necessitates a distinct and independent status in the global HIV response.” This 34-page policy brief hopes to fill that void.

In addition to issues directly related to HIV, the brief covers a variety of other topics, including hormonal therapy, stigma, discrimination, violence, mental health, coinfections such as hepatitis and tuberculosis, and community empowerment.
