The ballot measure passed by voters in Washington State to legalize marijuana took effect Thursday, December 6, Reuters reports. The law removes criminal sanctions for anyone 21 or older possessing 1 ounce or less of pot for recreational use. Driving under the influence of cannabis or using it in public remains illegal. The state Liquor Control Board and agriculture and public health officials have until December 1, 2013, to set up a system for marijuana to be legally sold and taxed at state-licensed stores.
