At the close of the 2011 United Nations High-Level Meeting on AIDS, world leaders adopted the 2011 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS. Among numerous goals, they committed to working towards reducing sexual transmission of HIV by 50 percent by 2015; reducing transmission of HIV among people who inject drugs by 50 percent by 2015; and eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015 and substantially reducing AIDS-related maternal deaths. They also set a target of 15 million people living with HIV on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment by 2015. Of the more than 33 million people worldwide living with HIV, only about 6 million of them currently receive ARVs.
