Texas HIV-Positive Candidate for Student Body Wins Election

Despite controversy, students at the University of Houston Downtown have elected Kristopher Sharp as vice president of their student body. The openly gay and HIV-positive candidate was subjected to discrimination during the campaign. A flier circulated on the college campus showed a picture of him with an X over it. Above it was a headline, “Want AIDS?” Below it was a caption saying not to support his and his running mate’s “homosexual agenda.” On the back of the flier was a copy of a medical document containing his home address, phone number and HIV status.

Congrats on your win.

Congratulations Mr Sharp! Your success is our success. It's sad to see that such ignorant and hateful people still thrive in the US. Not that I hate on them - I know their pathological thinking is more obsessive and fear based. But it would be nice to see a little more progress. But I suppose a student body prez prevailing over haters is the progress we get today.

I am really grateful to see how this turned out. Thanks for updating us on this story! I wos so disgusted to read about the discrimination and hate faced by Mr. Sharp. It's heartening to know that justice can prevail--even in Texas.

I can not express how thankful I am to be a part of such a strong and encouraging community of people. I would be lying if I said that I did not have my moments of doubt moving forward. However, the encouragement and support that I received from the community gave me the strength to persevere. And because of that we were ultimately victorious in our endeavor. Consider supporting me again by voting to send me to the upcoming Victory Fund Leaders Training. Vote Here tinyurl.com/ck2mk6d
