An orthopedic surgeon in Ireland who contracted HIV from a patient in 1997 has settled a lawsuit against his former hospital, RTE News reports. He was granted an undisclosed amount. The surgeon said he got the virus on the job by sustaining numerous needle stick injuries and contact with contaminated medical tools. The surgeon claims his HIV-positive status was the result of the hospital’s lack of patient HIV testing and its failure to adopt risk management procedures, infection control policies and training and educational programs. He operated on more than 100 patients three months before his diagnosis.
