DC Program Would Train Seniors as HIV/AIDS Peer Educators

In an effort to tackle rising HIV rates among senior citizens, the Washington, DC, City Council is considering a district-wide program to train seniors as HIV/AIDS peer educators, myfoxdc.com reports. Fueled by the lack of routine testing and the misconception that seniors are not at risk for HIV, new HIV/AIDS cases among seniors have increased nationwide. However, HIV rates among older DC residents have been particularly high. To address this growing problem, City Council member David Catania proposed the Senior HIV/AIDS Education and Outreach Program. If passed, it would be the nation’s first program to recruit and train seniors to conduct HIV prevention workshops in senior citizen centers and nursing homes.
