Through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the government has invested more than $65 billion in fighting the AIDS epidemic globally. New prevention and treatment targets for PEPFAR were announced by the White House as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (“2030 Agenda”), which is a global development plan for the next 15 years.
For the first time, PEPFAR sets specific targets for preventing HIV among girls and young women. The new prevention and treatment targets include:
- Reach 11.4 million people with HIV/AIDS treatment by the end of 2016, and 12.0 million people by the end of 2017
- Support 18.5 million people on antiretroviral treatment by the end of 2017. This will be accomplished by working jointly with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and partner country resources.
- Achieve a 25 percent decrease in HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (ages 15 to 24) within the highest-burden geographic areas of 10 sub-Saharan African countries jointly with partners by the end of 2016
- Achieve a 40 percent decrease in HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (ages 15 to 24) within these areas by the end of 2017
- Provide 13 million voluntary medical male circumcisions for HIV prevention, cumulatively, by the end of 2017
