President Obama has signed into law the PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act of 2013, according to a White House statement. The law reauthorizes the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief for another five years. Two year ago, Obama pledged PEPFAR would provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for 6 million people in the developing world by the end of 2013. In remarks the day after World AIDS Day, Obama said that goal was exceeded with 6.7 million people now getting ARVs from PEPFAR.
