Twenty-three children in the Indian state of Gujarat have tested HIV positive after receiving blood transfusions, prompting Indian health officials to investigate, the BBC reports. Since the children have thalassaemia, a blood disease, they all receive regular blood transfusions at a public government hospital. A routine test of 100 kids showed that 23 were HIV positive, all of them between 5 and 10 years old. The Guajarat health minister said the children may have been infected after receiving blood transfusions at other hospitals or may have already been positive. The children’s parents maintain that the children have only received transfusions at the government hospital.
