San Francisco Dental Clinic for HIV-positive People to Close

A dental clinic in San Francisco that treats low-income people living with HIV will close June 30 due to funding problems, according to the Bay Area Reporter (ebar.com, 4/24).

The Advanced General Dentistry (AGD) clinic at the University of the Pacific serves people with HIV, as well as patients with developmental disabilities and special needs.

“We're doing as much as we can to get people placed elsewhere,” said Dr. Richard Fredekind, associate dean for clinical services at the university. “It’s sad that the closure had to happen. We know it's a tremendous inconvenience for some patients.”

According to the article, there are ongoing discussions about whether or not the services provided by the dental clinic could be provided by another clinic at the university. The AGD clinic’s website contains a referral line to help patients find a new dentist.

Another sad commentary on the Ryan White funding disaster made by Congress in Dec 06. Our hearts go out in sympathy to SF from Long Island, NY. Our region has lost its best Adult Day Treatment facility, we've lost emergency housing assistance, we've lost all emergency financial assistance to PWLHAs. Congrats to Congress, the Bush admin, and the HHS, HRSA, and the HAB - your legacy will be HIV services closures around the country!

"I think that it's OK to be angry. I am sometimes—it's natural—we are HIV positive. but I always try to not let myself stay there too long. Let yourself feel you are human. You should not beat yourself up about being angry."
