A medical technician with hepatitis C who allegedly infected at least 39 people with the virus faces 14 new charges, The New York Times reports. David Kwiatkowski is accused of stealing syringes containing the powerful anesthetic pentanyl and then injecting himself, which tainted them with hep C, before filling them with saline and putting them back for medical use. He was arrested in July and pleaded not guilty to charges of tampering with a consumer product and illegally obtaining drugs. A federal grand jury has now indicted him with an additional seven counts of tampering with a consumer product, with a potential of 10 years in prison for each count, and with seven counts of illegally obtaining drugs, with a potential of four years in prison for each count. Each offense also can be subject to a $250,000 fine.
