Chicago’s Howard Brown Health Center is working with LAF (formerly known as Legal Assistance Foundation) and the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago (ALCC) to provide free civil legal help to its clients, according to a Howard Brown press release.

The medical legal clinic will be open at the Howard Brown center from 1 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Experts will review clients’ legal matters and then offer advice, legal representation or referrals. Clients can also make emergency appointments with the clinic staff.

“The serious civil legal matters that many of our patients and clients face also [have] a direct impact on their overall physical and mental health,” said Michelle Wetzel, Howard Brown’s senior vice president of policy, strategy and business development, in the press release. “For those experiencing eviction or having their electricity shut off, having to choose between paying your bills or paying for your medicine is a dilemma that no one should have to face. And we know that choosing the former can have disastrous health consequences. Having the medical-legal clinic in-house gives our providers the resource to help their patients meet these challenges.”

Howard Brown Health Center caters to the needs of the Chicago LGBT community, while LAF assists families living in poverty to address non-criminal legal issues, and the ALCC uses the law to help people living with HIV as well as those facing homelessness or other serious conditions.
