In remarks the day after World AIDS Day, President Obama pledged significant funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as HIV cure research. The United States would contribute $1 for every $2 pledged by other donors over the next three years to the Global Fund, up to $5 billion. Since pledges to the Global Fund fell short—$12 billion for the next three years, instead of $15 billion—U.S. contributions will total $4 billion. In addition, a new initiative at the National Institutes of Health will redirect $100 million from existing funds to HIV cure research.
