The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has introduced measures to reinforce its financial safeguards and to strengthen its prevention and detection of fraud and misuse of its grants, according to a Global Fund statement. The Global Fund suspended or terminated grants in December as a result of misappropriation in four countries. The measures include: expanding the mandate of monitoring firms, strengthening the role of country coordinating bodies, increasing the staff responsible for financial management, and doubling the budget of the independent inspector general. The measures are being implemented now and should be completed by June 2011.
