A bariatric clinic has settled a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over discrimination against two people because they have HIV, according to a DOJ statement. The settlement resolves allegations that Barix Clinics violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by refusing to perform weight loss surgery on an HIV-positive man in its Pennsylvania facility and cancelling such surgery at its Michigan facility for a man living with the virus. The clinic must pay $20,000 to the Pennsylvania man, $15,000 to the Michigan man and a $10,000 civil penalty. The center must also train its staff on the ADA and implement an antidiscrimination policy.
