Michigan GOP Official: People With AIDS Lie to Get Health Care

Dave Agema, the Michigan representative to the Republican National Committee, made controversial remarks about people with AIDS at a recent state party gathering, The Herald-Palladium reports.

During a holiday reception for the Berrien County Republican Party, Agema said the state party should adopt the national platform, which opposes marriage for same-sex couples. He also said he didn’t mind being criticized for his opposition to marriage equality. His experience working at American Airlines is the reason. Agema said airline workers would claim people with AIDS as lovers to get them health care.

“Folks, they [gay people] want free medical because they’re dying [when they’re] between 30 and 44 years old,” Agema said. “To me, it’s a moral issue. It’s a biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be, and it’s in our [national] platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong.”

Agema served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives from Grandville. He also served 27 years as a senior commercial airline pilot and 27 years as a fighter pilot and trainer in the U.S. Air Force.

I am a little confused at a politician and probably a lawyer putting the ethical question of lying on the table. The truth be told a lot of us HIV people have gone to many lengths in the past to get insurance companies' contracts and to make fake marriages in the military to get treatment to stay alive, is it, a lie or a truth of doing what one's needs to do to live or just part of the American Dream in Business.Truly most of our economic problems at this time are because of white collar lies

As I approach my 60th birthday, being born black and gay, living through the civil rights struggle hoping when I graduated from high school I wouldn't get drafted and sent to Vietnam like most poor minorities, now I struggle with h.i.v,appreciating what white gay males did for in the act up movement,I said all this to emphasize the struggle isn't over, young gays will have to take up the fight after we are gone, getting to comfortable is the problem in the black community, please vote in 2014 election

Now, besides living with a chronic condition we get to listen to someone throw the equivalent of a childish temper tantrum based on personal interpretations. Goodie. Doesn't he and other like him ever get tired of beating a dead horse? Maybe his party needs to focus on healthcare, jobs or a livable wage... you know, those things that get avoided by a mile otherwise.

Whoever Agema is or wants to be, His hate rings through. I have to be honest as an POZ man, that is learning to accept being gay, these comments hurt. They made me cry. I dont even live in MI. But it is another example of the hatred that makes me hate the fact I am gay. He is in an elected office. He is entitled to his opinion. But is he allowed to hurt and "BULLY" others with his comments. An article from the same paper the next day talks about the backlash. This gives me some hope.

What struck me was that he didn't see the big picture...People really want/need health care and will sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to get it. People should not have to get married to find affordable health care. That is the bigger issue he seems to have missed.

Well, I did have some one who was ill on my insurance as a domestic partner- I had to lie. It was not as if he was getting healthcare for free- WE had to PAY for it. We tried to get Medicaid with no luck-they kept denying him, until 4 wks before his death. If I can help a loved one out, I will. Dave Agema- Lord forbid you ever have to make a decision like that for someone you care about.

while Mr. Agema has his totally unfounded beliefs, I also believe that bigots shouldn't hold any kind of puclic office, but they do. Bob

First of all, the bible was COPIED from the same story that all the other religions use...with a few differences thrown in to make it more believable to people who live their life based on a lie. Those who believe in fairy tales are stupid.

BP - George W banned the use of embryonic stem cells and ran his 2004 campaign with marriage equality fear mongering front and center. While I'm certainly aware of his commendable efforts in Africa (PEPFAR), to make the erroneous claim that he also greatly supported HIV "research" is absurd and without factual basis. What is factual however is that today's GOP is the bastion of anti-gay bigotry and bias. Peruse any right wing site's comment section and you'll be enlightened.

I support Dave Agema right to state his views, ill or other wise, they are his views, and we should respect others right to express their views. yes, the title name is wrong and misleading. And as an Hetero, I attest to sweetpea, as being true. It is not about illness, it is about support and information, and I welcome Poz personal site. But found love on another site.

Chris Ritter, Madison, Ohio, 2013-12-12 15:08:05
With the ACA (Obamacare) people with HIV will have access to quality care via expanded Medicaid or Market Place based exchanges the the patchwork of care that is currently provided. That is the Christian thing to do you arrogant fool.

sweetpea, Albany OR, 2013-12-12 14:08:44
"People with AIDS lie to get health care" a VERY misleading title to this article, quoting Dave Agema. His issue was with Gay employees who "lied" to help friends w AIDS get medical as a domestic partner. The misleading title led one to beleive that all AIDS patients lie to get medical benefits. I'm sure there are as many Hetero couples who may have married to help out a friend with medical.Rather than this being about AIDS, it was more about his opposition to Gay marriage.

BP, NY, 2013-12-12 13:36:36
This site should be a place about our illness, not a partisan stir fest. I'm Poz and straight and use this site as a resource, but get tired of the partisan issues regarding the same-sex marriage issue. Not all republicans are bad, and the simple truth is that GW Bush did FAR more, money-and research wise to address global AIDS issues, despite his personal stances on stem-cell research and same-sex marriage. The guy in the article isn't even an elected representative, so why is this newsworthy?

Jerry Burton, Fredericksburg, 2013-12-12 12:18:51
And heres the Republican party for you people.

Will, Oakland, 2013-12-12 11:33:59
One does not have to 'oppose' 'traditional marriage' to support gay marriage. It's absurd. Furthermore, what would he have people dying of AIDS do? Die? Die when there is an abundance of treatment available to them that they cannot access? WTF?
